Q: When buying a new home, what upgrades should we consider? What holds the most value? Do we upgrade the lot? Do we increase the square footage? Add an extra bedroom?, etc.

A:

A lot depends on why you are buying the house. Are you buying it mostly as a home or mostly as an investment? There is a difference.


For the most part, upgrades are high-profit items for builders. They aren't designed to enhance the value of the house, but make you happier with the house you do buy.


If you are looking at your home as an investment, then you buy from the smaller to medium size in the tract and spend only a minimal amount on upgrades. If you are looking at your purchase as a home, then you select upgrades that will enhance your quality of living.



 

Boulder Area Information


Boulder Valley was first home of Native Americans, primarily the Southern Arapaho tribe, who maintained a village near Haystack Mountain. Utes, Cheyenne’s, Comanche’s, and Sioux were occasional visitors to the area as well. Gold seekers established the first non-native settlement in Boulder County on October 17, 1858 at Red Rocks near the entrance to Boulder Canyon.

Today, Boulder features one of the most extensive trail systems in the country, with scenic hikes into the Flatirons with stunning views into Arapaho National Forest and Rocky Mountain National Park. Boulder HS

Founded in 1875 as part of the University of Colorado, Boulder High is the oldest established high school in Colorado. Students regularly access the CU libraries, the Conference on World Affairs and cultural community activities. Boulder High is an Advanced Placement focus school, with one of the most comprehensive programs in the state, offering 29 Advanced Placement courses. Visual and performing arts have an excellent reputation.



New Vista HS

New Vista High School provides rigorous learning in a supportive culture. The school is designed to cultivate the unique talents, gifts, and interests of students who are ready to be more responsible for their own learning. We give students real choices in the program they take and the work they do in classes. In exchange, we require that all students do high quality work and earn a grade of A or B in core classes.



Justice High Charter School

The mission of Justice High School is to provide year round college prep education for all enrolled Boulder Valley and St. Vrain Valley students. Justice High School’s curriculum and program design is ideal for at risk youth who are disconnected from the traditional school system because of juvenile delinquency, drugs and alcohol, alienation, or other factors. Justice High provides its students with a structured academic setting with high expectations. Justice High’s philosophy is that these ‘at risk’ youth can become successful if given an opportunity and a structured environment. The school’s program provides instruction using the AP model.

Is BVSD’s virtual school providing online courses for high school and middle school students with complementing open student labs available 4 days a week. Boulder Preparatory High School is a Free-No-Fee College Preparatory Community that encourages the pursuit of knowledge and education as an intervention for youth, particularly those who may be “off-track.” We strive to graduate young people ready and eager to meet the challenges of college and adulthood with an appreciation of their responsibilities in the global community.



Halcyon School (Special Education)

Halcyon Middle High School is a unique educational and therapeutic program for BVSD students’ grades 6-12. HMHS is supported through a multi-agency agreement among the Boulder Valley School District, Mental Health Partners serving Boulder and Broomfield Counties and Boulder County’s Department of Housing and Human Services.
